Corning´s mind-blowing concept of a glass future  
  06.02.2012, "A Day Made of Glass 2" is a montage of "how highly engineered glass, with companion technologies, will help shape our world," according to Corning. It is mind-blowing to imagine everyday objects suddenly having rich, interactive displays and multiple functionalities. After watching the video, I began to think about how intelligent glass, installed on a broad scale, could change the world. There are two key integrations: in the education and medical fields.

Leading Glass Processing Manufacturer Gains More Business Visibility  
  06.02.2012, Columbus has entered an agreement with Romag Ltd to replace its current systems with a fully integrated 52-user ERP system based on Microsoft Dynamics AX. The Microsoft Dynamics AX solution with 52 enterprise users replaces two older systems, GlassPro for specialist sales order processing in the glass processing industry and a Pegasus Opera accounts package that previously managed financials, purchasing and invoicing.

Samsung to Make Super AMOLED Displays Even Stronger Thanks to Lotus Glass  
  06.02.2012, Samsung was already using Gorilla Glass in their Galaxy S devices to make them more scratch resistant and shatter proof, but they are now signing a partnership with Corning to manufacture the next generation of Gorilla Glass, called Lotus Glass. The Lotus Glass will withstand higher processing temperatures that are needed to manufacture AMOLED displays, so Samsung will benefit not just from being able to brag with a stronger display, but also to more easily and more cheaply manufacturer their panels.

Hold Hind National Glass, target of Rs 175: Unicon Invest  
  06.02.2012, Unicon Investment has recommended hold rating on Hindusthan National Glass and Industries (HNG) with a target price of Rs 175, in its January 31, 2012 research report.

Auto windshield maker Nippon Sheet Glass Co. said it will cut 3,500 jobs  
  03.02.2012, Japan Inc. is suffering and the supply chain is bearing the cost. Sumco Corp., a supplier to Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp., said yesterday it will cut 1,300 jobs. Auto windshield maker Nippon Sheet Glass Co., which sells to Mazda Motor Corp., said it will cut 3,500 jobs. They join NEC Corp., a Japanese maker of telecom equipment and components, which said last month it would eliminate 10,000 positions.

Pilkington plans to close one of its three UK lines  
  03.02.2012, The owner of the glass manufacturer Pilkington, Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG), says it will close one of its three UK production lines as it cuts costs. The move is part of NSG´s plans to cut 3,500 jobs worldwide. The company employs 3,000 people in the UK.

India´s Braj Binani Group acquires Belgian glass fibre company 3B  
  03.02.2012, Part of the US$1.6 billion Braj Binani Group, Binani Industries Ltd is the holding company catering to various businesses, from cement, zinc and composites to glass fibre. It is headquartered in Mumbai, India.

NSG Group Appoints New Executive VP  
  03.02.2012, The Japan-based NSG Group has appointed Keiji Yoshikawa as its representative executive officer, executive vice president of the company, and chief project management officer. In addition, the company has divided its automotive business unit into two strategic business units (SBUs): auto glass replacement (AGR) and original-equipment (OE).

  02.02.2012, About 500 tons of molten glass were spilled in an incident Monday afternoon at Guardian Industries´ glass-manufacturing plant in DeWitt, company officials said Tuesday.

DuPont and Suntech Sign Strategic Agreement  
  02.02.2012, DuPont and Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., the world´s largest producer of solar panels, have signed a strategic agreement to help increase the supply of photovoltaic materials and technologies for the growing global market for solar energy. The agreement focuses on technology advancements, supply chain optimization cost reduction initiatives, and DuPont(TM) Tedlar® polyvinyl fluoride film supply. The companies also are pursuing co-marketing opportunities. The companies´ goal is to achieve faster and broader adoption of solar energy to reduce the world´s dependence on fossil fuels. They intend to achieve the goal by further improving the technology for solar energy and helping reduce its costs and building greater awareness of its benefits to consumers.

Carl Zeiss Opens New Customer Office in South Korea  
  02.02.2012, Carl Zeiss Semiconductor Metrology Systems (SMS) Division has opened an office in the Bundang province of South Korea. The new location south of Seoul enables Carl Zeiss SMS to provide optimized customer service with faster delivery of spare parts and on-site activities.

DuPont Vespel® parts for pusher fingers help lower maintenance costs and rejects  
  02.02.2012, Emhart Glass of Cham/Switzerland, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-performance machines for the production of glass containers, now uses Vespel® SCP-5050 parts for thermal insulation, replacing the standard carbon graphite components used in the liners for pusher fingers. This change helped to further reduce maintenance costs for users and, at the same time, minimize reject rates of the produced containers. The pusher fingers are used to move up to four molded glass containers – at temperatures up to 600 °C and correspondingly soft – from the dead plate to the conveyor belt in less than a second. The bar-shaped liners, which are inserted within the pusher fingers, transfer the high acceleration forces involved in this process to the glass surface.

AGC to Restart Idled Auto Float Line in Light of ´Favorable´ Market Conditions  
  02.02.2012, AGC Glass Company North America has announced that it is planning to restart its idled G1 float glass line located at its Greenland manufacturing plant in Hawkins County, Tenn., toward the end of the year. The line has been shut down since 2008.
